Stevia Legalized in the US!
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted GRAS approval for a natural, zero-calorie sweetener it once sought to wipe out from the U.S. marketplace. Stevia, a safe alternative to sugar and aspartame, has endured a long fight to be accepted in the US by the FDA, mainly by pressure from corporate giants like Coca Cola and Cargill. This is a big win for profits by these companies (as they are introducing their own patented version of stevia called “Truvia”), but also for consumers. A move from aspartame and sugar as sweeteners in soft drinks represents a steering away from obesity, diabetes and other diseases linked to over-consumption of sugar and aspartame.
